What is L-Glutathione?

L-Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine) and the predominant intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol, functioning as the primary non-enzymatic reductant in mammalian cells. Its thiol group drives direct radical scavenging, cofactor activity for glutathione peroxidases and transferases, and conjugation reactions central to Phase II hepatic detoxification.

Documented GSH depletion is a consistent feature across virtually every chronic disease model investigated in redox biology, making it a key mechanistic variable in oxidative-stress research. Researchers study it as both a marker of cellular redox status and a modulator of ferroptosis — an iron-dependent, non-apoptotic cell-death pathway with growing relevance in oncology and toxicology models.
